Have you ever left any equipment for long and found it covered with rust? Have you ever been troubled with rust damages caused due to water?

Ok, let’s take another example.

Have you seen an old unused set of tools? What about an old bicycle or car?

The common factor in all these items is rust. If you leave them uncured for a long time or abandon them, they start corroding. Moreover, they will develop a reddish-brown colour formed due to rusting. This also results in the degradation of the components.

The scraping or superficial removal of the rust would not provide any solution . Moreover, rust damages the surface of the object or equipment leaving it of very little to no use. It can lead to equipment failure, breakage or other problems and damages.

So, if this has been your concern, rust preventive oils might be your solution. They are widely used in preventing corrosion while storage and transportation of components.

How is rust formed?

What is rust?

How is it formed?

Rust is scientifically called iron oxide, it is a reddish-brown layer that forms due to the reaction of oxygen and iron when moisture or water is present or introduced.

Rust is formed on iron or its alloys and even in non-ferrous metals but with a different colour. It can either affect the component mildly or completely disintegrate it over time.

What are rust preventive oils?

Rust preventive oils are special formulations developed for lubricating and protecting metal surfaces from rusting and corrosion. They are formulated using refined base oils and distillates that make them adhere to the metal surface and prevent any form of corrosion or rusting.

Let’s explore what are the applications of rust preventive oils.

  • Popularly used as a lubricants, they find their application in gardening tools, vehicles and factory machine parts for protection against corrosion
  • During the production stage, when the product is between various machining operations or finished, they are applied to the surface. This creates a protective coating around the metal thus preventing corrosion.
  • Rust preventive oils can be water or solvent-based. Water-based ones are considered as environment friendly.
  • Soft wax-like oils are ideal for oil seals, piston assemblies, transmission and timing chains, wire ropes and single items. They are melted in a container and the metal or component dipped in the molten oil thereby forming a thick film to ensure long-term protection.
  • They are recommended to provide internal protection to the rear axle assemblies, fuel pumps and oil tanks. Their application can be done by spraying, brushing or dipping.
  • Premium rust preventive oils find their applications in highly machined components, tools and precision parts. The solvent evaporates leaving a transparent and thin layer of rust preventive film.
  • Certain rust preventive oils are specially formulated as a protective oil for all kinds of bearings. The oil can be used for a dual purpose- for inter process treatments as well as for application on precision parts at the final packing stage.
  • They are recommended for use in the construction sector to protect the material especially during the monsoons against rust.
